Mixed media artist Paul Brigham downplays his formal artistic training and cites as more influencial the education he received from his free time as a child wandering through the woods observing its wonders. His father was artistically talented and designed and built a Japanese garden which Paul would often tend.
Brigham grew up in a home filled with traditional Asian paintings of birds, flowers and landscapes. Early in life he developed an interest in Asia and Eastern philosophy.
While attending the University of Massachusetts, he studied a wide range of subjects, from literature and film to history and philosophy. At 20 he quit school and traveled the country, falling in love with the west. He spent time in Yosemite National Park and to this day he frequently visits the Sierra.
He began his painting career after settling in Marin County where he studied at the College of Marin. He works in a co-operative studio in Marin that he co-founded.
